GRACE NIELSEN won both diving sections and qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in March as the Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action at Rowan University on Saturday.
The Red Hawk women (6-2, 2-1 NJAC) had their four-meet winning streak snapped in a 201.5-98.5 loss to the Profs, while the men (4-3, 0-2 NJAC) suffered a 204-94 setback against Rowan.
Nielsen earlier this season set the Montclair State program records posting an 11-dive total score of 448.70 points in a win over TCNJ. That surpassed the NCAA qualifying mark of 410 however she needed to reach the standard again to put her name on the list of competitors.
She would do just that with a total 11-dive score of 421.25 points sending her to the NCAA Regional Championships at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY on March 2-3. Nielsen becomes the first MSU diver to qualify for an NCAA event since Kim Roy competed in the Division III Championship Meet in 1997.
Nielsen won the first portion of the one-meter competition with a score of 239.40 points before taking the second section with score of 181.85 points.
STEVEN ROTH swept the butterfly events winning the 200 in a time of 1:59.26 before coming back with a time of 52.39 seconds in the 100 event.
KEVIN CLAUSS was also a double-winner posting a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.96) and the 200 individual medley (2:03.20) in addition to finishing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.35).
JAMES SINGEWALD placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:02.21) and
MICHAEL PACHECO was second in the 500 freestyle (4:56.38).
ERIN CANNON captured the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.17 with
MARGAUX WINCHOCK doing the same in the 100 butterfly (1:00.50).
CLAIRE LUIGARD was second in the 200 IM (2:19.08) with
MADISON FRANKE swimming 56.37 for second in the 100 freestyle. The 400 frrestyle relay team of
GENNA BREWER, Winchock, Franke and
CHRISTINA CUSMANO finished tied for the top spot with a time of 3:43.05.
The Red Hawks, who were coming off a month-long hiatus, are back in action on Saturday, January 20 on the road in Mahwah against Ramapo College.
