Montclair, NJ – Senior midfielder
AMBER HASLETT scored a goal and assisted on another as No. 10 Montclair State captured its NJAC opener on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory over Kean University at Sprague Field.
KAILEY DALGAUER and
ELIZABETH CIMILLUCA each collected a goal as the Red Hawks improved to 11-1 while winning its fourth straight contest. Melissa Way recorded the lone goal as Kean fell to 4-8 overall, 0-2 in conference play.
A scoreless battle for the first 34 minutes, Montclair got on the board with 32 seconds remaining before halftime. Haslett moved in from the right side and slid a pass into the circle for Cimilluca, who made a reverse chip from eight yards out inside the right post for a 1-0 Red Hawk lead.
MSU's
NICOLE ANDRIANI made a save early in the second half to keep the one-goal advantage before Montclair extended it to two goals at the 42:34 mark. Dalgauer collected a ball inside the top of the circle and made the same reverse move, banging in the shot for her fourth of the season.
Andriani made one more save and the MSU defense blocked several other shots over the next 16 minutes before Montclair State got its final goal from Haslett with 11:44 to play. Off a penalty corner, MSU made three precision passes, the last from
KELLY WATSON in front to Haslett who finished off the play giving the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead.
Way broke the shutout with 2:09 left knocking in a shot off a scramble in front of the cage.
Andriani finished with four saves for MSU, which outshot the Cougars 14-12.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 6 with another NJAC matchup as the Red Hawks host Stockton University at 1:00 pm.
