Women's Soccer Clips Rutgers-Camden in NJAC Tournament 2-1

McLaughlin's Late Goal Sends Red Hawks to Semifinals

Camden, NJ – Junior midfielder EMMA MCLAUGHLIN scored off a corner kick with 1:35 remaining lifting fifth-seeded Montclair State past No. 4 seed Rutgers-Camden 2-1 in the first round of the NJAC Women's Soccer Championship at Rutgers Community Park on Saturday.

Kaitlin Scrivanich had a goal for the Red Hawks (10-3-5), who now advance to the semifinals on Wednesday, October 31 in Ewing, NJ against top-seeded The College of New Jersey. The two will square off for a second time in an 11-day span at 6:00 pm in Lions Stadium. The teams played to a scoreless draw on October 20.

MSU and Rutgers-Camden (8-8-2) met back on September 15 and played to a 1-1 draw with both goals coming late in the second half. Today's contest just about mirrored that one as both teams held each other off the scoreboard in the first half with Montclair holding a 74 advantage in shots.

Natalie Eberhardt made two saves for the Raptors in the first 11 minutes stopping MICHAELA KNOBLOCK at the 10:35 mark and denying ASHLEY KOESTER 38 seconds later. She would make one more in the 23rd minute with a stop against MADISON MARTINO. Rutgers-Camden put its only shot on goal five minutes later as Taylor Hueston fired a shot that was stopped by Montclair's LINDSAY FREEWALT.

Montclair broke the scoreless tie 1:08 into the second half. MADDIE MUSICO lofted a ball into the box from the right side that Scrivanich headed into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Red Hawk lead. But just like the regular-season meeting the Raptors answered quickly as Melissa Peel knotted the game at 53:36 on a high shot from the top of the box off a scramble from near the goal.

Rutgers-Camden would get two opportunities to take the lead however Freewalt came up big twice against Meghan Wachira in the 58th minute. Those would be the Raptors' best chances as it managed just one shot over the final 32 minutes.

In the 71st minute, Montclair came within inches of taking the lead but a shot by EMILY DEGEYTER clanged off the crossbar keeping the contest tied at 1-1.  DeGeyter would factor in the game-winning goal as she served a kick into the box where McLaughlin was able head it past Eberhardt for her first tally of the year.

Freewalt finished with four saves for MSU, which outshot the Raptors 12-9 in the game.
