MYLES MITCHELL-WHITE scored 17 points and pulled down six rebounds however second-ranked Williams College handed Montclair State a 73-59 setback in the Steel Club Classic at Moravian College on Sunday evening.
IRVING CALLENDER IV added 11 points and six boards for the Red Hawks (9-3), who were making their return to the court after an 18-day layoff. Montclair trailed 38-30 at halftime and pulled within 38-36 early in the second half before the undefeated Ephs (13-0) scored 10 of the next 12 points.
Williams scored the first six points of the game however Mitchell-White sank two at the line to make the score 8-6 with 15:31 to go in the first half. Bobby Casey drained a three and Matt Karpowicz scored six in a row to boost the lead to 20-6 at the midpoint of the opening half.
Mitchell-White's layup with 4:25 left trimmed the deficit to 28-22 but James Heskett tallied five consecutive points including a three with 2:05 to play as Williams led 38-23. Montclair would score the final seven points as
JOSEPH RADI connected from behind the arc with Callender getting the final four as MSU trailed 38-30 at the break.
In the second half, the Red Hawks got within 38-36 on a layup by
JORDAN ROBERSON. The Ephs responded scoring 10 of the next 12 points to push the lead back to double digits. Casey had a three and Heskett made three at the foul line before two foul shots by Sadlock made the score 48-38 with 13:06 remaining.
Akbar Hofman added 10 points for Montclair State, which shot just 30 percent (20-of-67) from the field, including 4-of-19 from behind the arc.
JALEN PARHAM scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds. Heskett finished with a game-high 28 points for Williams, who got a 17 points from Casey and a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds by Karpowicz.
MSU returns to action on Monday, December 31 with its second game in the tournament. Montclair State takes on Virginia Wesleyan at 5:30 pm.
