Women's Lacrosse Beaten by No. 8 York in Season Opener

Orban Two Goals; Mahlstadt with Goal, Assist for Red Hawks

York, PA – Senior CHELSEA ORBAN scored twice however eighth-ranked York College used an 11- goal run bridging both halves as the Spartans downed Montclair State 15-4 in the Red Hawks' season opener on Sunday afternoon.

MEGAN MAHLSTADT had a goal and assist for the Red Hawks (0-1), who dropped the season-opener for the first time since 2011.

Megan Fox scored four times and Caitlin Rankin had three goals for the Spartans (1-0).

Orban gave MSU a 1-0 lead 1:52 into the contest as she registered an unassisted goal. Fox turned that one-goal Montclair lead into a three-goal deficit as she recorded the final four goals of the opening period. She tied the game with 17:29 to play and put York in front with her second just past the midpoint of the first half. Her third came with 7:46 to play before tallying the final score with 5:06 remaining giving the Spartans a 4-1 lead at the break.

York's scoring continued in the second half with the Spratans finding the back of the net seven times in the first 10 minutes. Rankin had two of those including the final one with 20:07 left for an 11-1 lead. Rhiannon Brown snapped the run two minutes later with her first collegiate goal and Mahlstadt followed 66 seconds later making the score 11-3.

The Spratans put the game away with a four-goal run. Claudia DeVenti had two as York built a 15-3 lead with 3:05 left. Orban got the final goal of the contest.

Brittany Costigan led the Red Hawks with four draws while LEANNE MCCLOSKEY scooped up a team-best three ground balls. AMANDA MAGUIRE stopped 12 shots in 38 minutes of action with Allyn Lilien making one over the final 22 minutes in her collegiate debut.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, February 28 traveling to Hoboken, NJ to face Stevens at 4:30 pm.
