Orban Four Goals as Montclair Picks Up First Win

Colorado Springs, CO – Senior CHELSEA ORBAN scored four goals, including two during a key three-goal run late in the second half as Montclair State picked up its first win of the season with a 12-11 victory over 16th-ranked St. John Fisher at Colorado College on Wednesday.

MEGAN MAHLSTADT scored three times with KYLE GRAVER and Rhiannon Brown adding two apiece as the Red Hawks improved to 1-2 on the season. Kelsie Schindler and Mallory Eymer had two goals each for St. John Fisher (1-1).

The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first six minutes before Montclair took the lead with a three-goal run. Graver assisted on a Mahlstadt goal and tied the game with 21:18 left on an unassisted tally. Mahlstadt put MSU in front less than a minute later however St. John Fisher scored four of the next five goals for a 7-5 lead which it took into halftime.

SYDNEE SAPP and Graver each scored early in the second half forging a 7-7 tie but again the Cardinals went back on top as Mackenzie LeVan and Olivia Marziale scored 94 seconds apart for a 9-7 advantage with 22:21 to go. Back-to-back goals from Mahlstadt and Orban knotted the game for the fifth time at 9-9 with 19:55 left. Maria Hristodoulou gave St. John Fisher the lead four minutes later before Montclair came up with its decisive run.

Brown scored unassisted with 12:38 left for a 10-10 tie and Orban regained the lead for the Red Hawks with her third goal at the 49:18 mark. Her final tally with 5:07 left gave MSU a two-goal cushion. The Montclair defense then came up big over the next four-plus minutes not allowing a shot.

Schindler scored for SJC with five seconds left however the Cardinals would not get a chance to tie the contest.

Graver finished with two goals and three assists for MSU which got an outstanding effort from freshman Brittany Costigan who had 10 draws in the game. AMANDA MAGUIRE stopped nine shots and added four ground balls while Meghan Gorman and Wynn Boehmcke had three apiece. LEANNE MCCLOSKEY added five draws and forced a pair of turnovers.

The Red Hawks complete their trip on Friday, March 9 taking on Colorado College at 5:30 pm.
