Brown Scores Four for Red Hawks

Colorado Springs, CO – Freshman Rhiannon Brown scored four goals while senior CHELSEA ORBAN added three but a three-goal run by Colorado College near the 10-minute mark of the second half proved to be the difference as the Red Hawks fell to the Tigers 16-14 on Friday afternoon.

KYLE GRAVER and SYDNEE SAPP scored two goals apiece for the Red Hawks, who fell to 1-3 on the season. Steph Kelly netted seven goals for Colorado College (3-2).

Kelly scored twice in a three-goal run early in the first half giving Colorado College a 4-1 lead. The Red Hawks answered with a five-goal spurt as five different players scored. JESSICA ANDREULA got the last goal with 19:08 left giving MSU a 6-4 advantage.

Nikki Blair and Kelly each scored twice in the final 19 minutes as the Tigers led 8-7 at halftime.

After Colorado College registered the first goal of the second half, Brittany Costigan and Graver scored two minutes apart to knot the game at 9-9. Kelly had two goals in a four-goal run that gave the Tigers a 13-9 lead however Montclair countered with three goals to pull within 13-12 on Orban's goal with 14:02 remaining.

Allie Thuet and Lauren Pejza scored 18 seconds apart with under 10 minutes remaining and Kelly's seventh goal with 9:22 put the Tigers in front 16-12. Orban scored with five minutes left and Brown added another two minutes later making the score 16-14. But that would be as close as Montclair would get.

MEGAN MAHLSTADT had a goal, two assists, three caused turnovers and three ground balls for the Red Hawks. Costigan had five draws with goalkeepers AMANDA MAGUIRE (14 saves) and Allyn Lilien (4 saves) combining to make 18 stops.

Montclair State returns to New Jersey and will play its home opener on Tuesday, March 13 taking on McDaniel College at 3:30 pm. The game was originally scheduled for March 3 but was postponed due to snow.
