SYDNEE SAPP each scored twice however a quick start by Stevens in the first half proved to be the difference as the Ducks topped Montclair State 11-6 on Wednesday afternoon.
JESSICA ANDREULA and Rhiannon Brown each scored or the Red Hawks, who fell to 0-2 on the season. Mackenzie Metzler and Kyra Bednarski had three goals apiece for Stevens (2-0).
Scoreless through the first eight minutes, the Ducks broke through as Hannah Condren scored with 21:26 left. Metzler got her first a minute later for a 2-0 lead. Bednarski had a hand in the next two scores, assisting on the first and netting the second to extend the host's lead to 4-0. Julianna Ricci got the last goal as Stevens held a five-goal advantage with 10:47 left in the opening period.
MSU answered with three straight as Sapp put the Red Hawks on the board near the midpoint of the half and two goals by Orban trimmed the deficit to 5-3 with 6:59 remaining. Ricci added a goal with 30 seconds left as Stevens led by three at the half.
Metzler opened the scoring in the second for a 7-3 Ducks lead. Sapp countered 24 seconds later and Andreula's goal with 27:17 to go pulled MSU within 7-5. But Stevens ripped off the next four goals with Bednarski book-ending the spurt widening the lead to 11-5 with 7:35 remaining. Brown got the final goal of the game for the Red Hawks less than a minute later.
Meghan Mahlstadt had two assists for MSU, which got eight draws from Brittany Costigan.
AMANDA MAGUIRE and Allyn Lilien combined for six saves.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 3 for its home opener at Sprague Field. The Red Hawks face McDaniel College at 1:00 pm.
