Men's Lacrosse Slips Past Sewanee, 10-9

Wulster Three Goals; Haemmerle, Bellezza Lead MSU

Fort Washington, PA – Senior BRADY WULSTER scored three times and junior MATT HAEMMERLE registered the decisive goal as Montclair State edged Sewanee, 10-9 at Germantown Academy on Sunday afternoon.

Haemmerle and DAN BELLEZZA each had a pair of goals and finished with three and two assists respectively as the Red Hawks evened their record at 2-2 in their first action since over two weeks. MSU had not played since March 3 at Rensselaer.

Haemmerle, Bellezza and Wulster all scored in the first five minutes of the game staking Montclair to a 3-0 lead. Belleza's second extended the lead to 4-1 however the Tigers (4-4) netted the final four goals of the period for a 5-4 advantage.

Wulster finished off a feed from Haemmerle to open the second however Henry Burns scored a minute later and Hayden Hunt's goal with 6:29 left gave the Tigers (4-4) a 7-5 lead. SEAN STADTLANDER cut the deficit to a goal 57 seconds after that as MSU trailed 7-6 at the break.

Montclair dominated the third period as the Red Hawks outshot Sewanee and held possession for a majority of the quarter. Mike Waslik tied the game 1:34 into the period and Wulster followed 18 seconds later putting MSU on top 8-7 heading into the fourth.

Stadtlander set up Peters early in the fourth giving MSU a 9-7 lead. But the Tigers answered with the next two goals forging a 9-9 tie with 9:18 to play. Montclair won the ensuing faceoff and kept possession as ROB PAPA scooped up a ground ball. That led to the go-ahead score as Bellezza found Haemmerle with just over eight minutes to play.

Sewanee's Tai Wharton kept that score with a pair of saves with the Red Hawks' MATTHEW MCLAREN making a huge stop with 4:05 left. MSU fended off several Tiger chances in the closing minutes including one final stop. Taking over with 34 seconds left, Sewanee called timeout with 23 ticks and were setting up for a final shot when defender AARON LOSCHIAVO separated the ball from Jake Vaughn's stick. LUKE NEALON collected the ground ball and ran out the clock for the victory.

McLaren made three saves in the final 30 minutes to record his first career victory. JACK CARDEW made four stops in the first half. JOSEPH DIANTONIO forced a pair of turnovers with Haemmerle getting four ground balls to lead MSU, which outshot Sewanee, 41-23.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, March 21 as they host Union College at Sprague Field beginning at 4:00 pm.
