Montclair, NJ – Senior
CHELSEA ORBAN scored four goals, two coming in a key run midway through the second half, as Montclair State extended its winning streak to three games with a 14-12 victory over College at Brockport on Sunday afternoon.
SYDNEE SAPP added three goals and the Red Hawks got two goals each from freshmen
BRITTANY COSTIGAN and
RHIANNON BROWN to up its record to 4-3 on the year. Heather Conklin had scored five times for Brockport, which fell to 0-5 on the season.
Conklin scored the first two goals of the game and three times in the first five minutes helping Brockport to a 4-1 lead. MSU answered with the next four with Orban netting the first with 20:15 left. Sapp added the next two and Orban set up
KYLE GRAVER with 6:38 to play giving the Red Hawks a 5-4 advantage.
Conklin had a hand in the next two Brockport scores putting the Golden Eagles in front 6-5 however Graver and Brown scored 45 seconds apart inside five minutes to go sending MSU into the break with a 7-6 lead.
Conklin's fifth goal and a follow up one by Andrea Zlinsky 19 seconds later regained the lead for Brockport in the first minute of the second half. Sapp tied the game at 8-8 and Costigan tallied 48 seconds later giving MSU the lead for good. Orban scored with 25:11 remaining for a 10-8 lead before Samantha Dooling cut the deficit to a goal with just under 21 minutes left.
Brown began the key run for the Red Hawks with 19:08 to go and
JESSICA ANDREULA fed Orban for the next goal making the score 12-9. Andreula converted a free-position attempt for the next goal with Orban doing the same with 14:55 remaining widening the MSU lead to 14-9. The goal marked the 100
th career point for Orban, who became the 24
th player in program history to reach that milestone.
Brockport didn't go away. Zlinsky scored with 12:47 left with Taylor Thomas and Jillian Babinsky netting goals 14 seconds apart as the Golden Eagles pulled within 14-12 with 10:44 to play. But that would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get as the MSU defense limited Brockport to just one shot the rest of the way.
Freshman goalkeeper
ALLYN LILIEN made 10 saves in a relief appearance. Orban, Graver and Andreula each had two assists for the Red Hawks. Costigan had a fine all-around effort with five caused turnovers, six draws and four ground balls.
Montclair State is back in action on Thursday, March 29 with a tough contest. The Red Hawks host No. 2 Middlebury College at 3:00 pm.
