ELENA RADESICH drove in all four runs in the first game and junior
VICTORIA GEHRING had the game-winning run in the second contest as Montclair State swept a pair of one-run contests with a 4-3 eight-inning and 1-0 victories over Baldwin Wallace and John Carroll respectively at the Sunkissed Games on Monday.
Sophomore
VALENTINA CUCCI earned a win and a save as the Red Hawks moved to 3-1 on the season.
In the opener, Montclair snapped a scoreless tie in the third inning on one big swing from Radesich.
KAYLEE POWERS drew a one-out walk and
NOEL HODGINS was hit by a pitch. The Yellowjackets got the next out however Radesich drilled a three-run homer over the centerfield fence for a 3-0 MSU advantage. Baldwin Wallace tied the game in the fourth plating three runs. Erica English doubled home Sami Minor with the first run and Hailey Owens singled in two more knotting game at 3-3.
The game stayed that way until the eighth-inning international tiebreaker. Montclair struck first as Hodgins was sacrificed to third by
AMBER POWERS. Radesich then stroked a double with the go-ahead run putting the Red Hawks in front 4-3. Baldwin Wallace would get the tying run to third in its half of the inning with one out. But Cucci got Sam Mott to pop up in the infield for the second out and after a walk, induced a force play to end the game.
Cucci (1-0) allowed two hits and the one walk in her four innings. Mott (1-2) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
The second game became a pitcher's duel between sophomore
NICOLE MAJEWSKI and John Carrol's Jessica Cook who put zeros on the scoreboard until the Red Hawks broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Radeisch collected a one-out double.
AMBER POWERS followed with a single and a ground out moved pinch-runner
ALI WALEK and Powers up to second and third. Gehring then lined a 1-1 pitch back through the middle score Walek for a 1-0 lead.
John Carroll would threaten in the seventh registering a pair of two-out singles putting the tying run in scoring position. Cucci entered the game and got a force out to earn her first save of the year.
Majewski (1-0) got the victory allowing six hits and striking out one. Cook fell to 0-2 despite allowing just five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Montclair State is now off on until Wednesday, March 7 when it continues action at the Sunkissed Games. MSU faces St. Joseph's (ME) at 9am followed by an 11:15 am contest with Meredith College.
