BRITTANY COSTIGAN scored with six seconds remaining in the first overtime segment as Montclair State slipped past Kean University 12-11 at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.
CHELSEA ORBAN scored three times as the Red Hawks (6-5, 1-1 NJAC) rebounded after squandering a three-goal lead in the second half. Costigan and
SYDNEE SAPP had two goals apiece for Montclair.
Brittany Ballack had three goals for Kean (10-2, 0-2 NJAC), which dropped its second straight following a 10-game win streak to open the season.
The Red Hawks led 7-4 at halftime and took a 10-7 lead with 17:36 to play after
MICHAELAH REYNOLDS finished off a feed from
ERIN CAMPBELL. Montclair then went scoreless for the next 12 minutes with the Cougars taking advantage of the scoring drought.
Ballack scored off a free-position attempt with 12:20 to go and did it again less than two minutes later pulling Kean within 10-9. Danni LeSaint knotted the game with 7:37 remaining and Morgan Graham's goal with 6:01 left gave the Cougars the lead, 11-10.
Orban deadlocked the score at 11-11 on a free-position goal with 4:54 left. Goalkeepers
ALLYN LILIEN and Nikki Apostolopoulos kept the game that way as they made two saves apiece. Apostolopoulos denied
RHIANNON BROWN 30 seconds later off the draw with Lilien stopping Taylor Nyberg with 3:18 to go. Allen made another against LeSaint with a minute left before Apostolopoulos came up big against Sapp with 28 ticks remaining in regulation.
In the overtime, Montclair won the draw and held possession for the first 1:24 seconds before turning it over. Kean gave it right back and the Cougars were called for a foul giving Orban a free-position attempt and a chance to win the game. Apostolopoulos sticked away the attempt however
JESSICA ANDREULA was there to scoop up the ground ball. That led to another free-position attempt which MSU capitalized on as Costigan flipped a shot inside the near post for the game-winner.
Campbell finished with a goal and two assists for the Red Hawks. Leann McCloskey and Costigan registered nine and seven draws respectively. McCloskey also added two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Lilien, who played the second half and overtime periods, made seven saves.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 14 with a road NJAC contest at Rutgers-Camden beginning at 1:00 pm.
