Powers Surge Leads Montclair to Sweep of Rutgers-Camden

Sister Combine for Three of MSU's Five Homers; Luna, Cucci Blast HRs

Camden, NJ – Sophomore KAYLEE POWERS homered in both ends of the doubleheader and Montclair State smacked five round-trippers total as the Red Hawks swept Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday.

VALENTINA CUCCI, AMBER POWERS and ALANA LUNA each belted one over the fence as the Red Hawks (21-9, 7-5 NJAC) extended their winning streak to five games with a 9-2 and 8-2 victory over the Scarlet Raptors (9-16, 2-10 NJAC).

AMBER POWERS gave MSU a 1-0 lead in the opener with an RBI single however that was matched by Rutgers-Camden in the bottom of the inning as Gabrielle Castellini tied the game with a single. Cucci regained the lead for the Red Hawks in the third with her third home run but again the Raptors tied the game at 2-2 on an RBI infield single by Kendra Pfister.

Montclair took the lead for good in the fifth as AMBER POWERS drove in sister Kaylee on a fielder's choice. The following inning, KAYLEE POWERS launched a two-run home run for a 5-2 lead. Luna put the finishing touches with a three-run shot in the seventh.

Cucci (5-2) earned the win in relief as she recorded the final 12 outs (4 IP). The righthander allowed three hits and struck out one. Pfister (4-10 took the loss for Rutgers-Camden.

Cucci would give Montclair State a 1-0 in the nightcap on an RBI single and the lead became 3-0 in the fourth. VICTORIA GEHRING lofted a sacrifice fly and ELENA RADESICH singled home KAYLEE POWERS. AMBER POWERS cracked a solo home run in the fifth making the score 4-0 and doubled home two more runs in the sixth for a 6-1 lead. Luna had an RBI single in the inning and a sacrifice fly by Samantha DiClementi extended Montclair's lead to 8-1

KAYLEE POWERS closed out the Montclair State scoring with her second home run of the day in the top of the seventh.

Righthander NICOLE MAJEWSKI upped her record to 9-1 on the year as she got the victory. Majewski went the first six innings allowing eight hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Kennedy Whalen (4-6) took the loss.

AMBER POWERS went 3-for-4 while KAYLEE POWERS, Gehring, Cucci and DiClementi had two hits each.

Montclair State goes right back to work on Sunday, April 22 hosting New Jersey City University at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 1:00 pm.
