Red Hawks Winning Streak Snapped in Twinbill Loss to Ramapo

Roadrunners Sweep Doubleheader 8-5 & 3-0

Montclair, NJ – Second baseman Ally Spellman belted a three-run homer in the opener and righthander Kristina Brizek tossed a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as Ramapo College swept a pair of games from Montclair State at the MSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday.

Brizek also drove in a pair runs in the doubleheader as the Roadrunners posted wins of 8-5 and 3-0 to improve to 17-10 on the season, 7-5 in NJAC play.

Sophomore third baseman ELENA RADESICH drove in three runs for the Red Hawks, who had their seven-game winning streak snapped. MSU (23-11) is now 9-7 in NJAC play with two games remaining at The College of New Jersey on Saturday, April 28.

Brizek gave Ramapo a 1-0 lead in the opener with an RBI single and Sisi Machinski doubled home a run in the second for a two-run advantage.

Montclair would take the lead with three runs in the third. Radesich doubled in the first and scored as AMBER POWERS bounced into a fielder's choice. Pinch-hitter LIA STAMILE worked out a nine-pitch walk with the bases load forcing in the go-ahead run.

The Roadrunners answered those three runs with three of their own in the fifth. Shannon Cox plated the first with single to tie the game and an error allowed another to cross the plate making the score 4-3. Brizek tripled to deep center field scoring Cox as Ramapo went up 5-3. Spellman connected on a three-run homer the following inning giving the Roadrunners a five-run lead.

Radesich cut the deficit back to 8-5 in the sixth with a two-run double however reliever Erin Fitzsimmons fanned the final two hitters of the inning to prevent any further damage and closed out the game retiring the side in order in the seventh.

Fitzsimmons got the victory as she went the final 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs and three hits. She struck out four and maneuvered her way around five walks. VALENTINA CUCCI (5-3) took the loss for MSU.

Spellman was 3-for-4 as was Brizek and Machinski. Radesich had three hits for Montclair State with VICTORIA GEHRING recording two hits.

In the nightcap, Brizek and MSU's NICOLE MAJEWSKI traded zeros on the scoreboard until the sixth inning when Ramapo struck for three runs. Spellman singled in Carli Egan, who snuck under the tag at the plate for the first run Cox added an RBI single and Krista Verrino added the third run with a sacrifice fly.

Brizek made that hold up as she allowed just four singles in upping her record to 7-2. She struck out four. Majewski took the loss falling to 10-2. ALANA LUNA had two hits for Montclair.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Thursday, April 26 with a 3:00 pm doubleheader at home against DeSales. It will be Senior Day as Montclair State honors its four – NOEL HODGINS, Gehring, Luna and SARAH GUY, prior to the contest.
