Montclair, NJ – Senior
CHELSEA ORBAN scored five goals while
JESSICA ANDREULA and
SYDNEE SAPP each added two as Montclair State locked down a berth in the NJAC Tournament with a 12-8 victory over Stockton University at Sprague Field on Saturday.
Freshman
BRITTANY COSTIGAN scored once and set the single-season record for draw controls as the Red Hawks closed out their regular season at 9-6 overall, 4-2 in the NJAC. Montclair will be the No. 3 seed and face No. 2 seed Rowan University in the semifinals on Wednesday, May 2 in Glassboro. The two teams squared off on April 21 with the Profs registering a 14-10 victory.
Junior Tamara Torales scored five goals for the Ospreys (9-7, 2-4 NJAC), who closed out their regular season with two consecutive losses.
Montclair State built a 5-0 lead over the first 18 minutes of the game. Andreula and Orban scored 32 seconds apart with 27 minutes remaining and freshman
RHIANNON BROWN added another with 22:51 to play for a 3-0 lead. Orban's second eight minutes later pushed the lead to four before Andreula found
KYLE GRAVER for the five-goal advantage with 12:10 to go.
Torales got Stockton on the board with 10:18 left however Sapp answered two minutes later finishing off a feed from Orban making the score 6-1.
Torales netted the final foal of the half and opened the scoring in the second pulling Stockton within 6-3. The Red Hawks then scored five of the next six goals including four in a row for an 11-4 advantage. Orban had two along with an assist with Andreula, Sapp and Costigan accounting for the other three tallies.
Stockton answered with a run of four goals over a four-minute span. Torales got the first with eight minutes to play and two straight by Gaby Ojeda closed the gap to 11-7 before Torales made it a three-goal game with 4:29 left. Orban dashed any hopes of a further comeback scoring with 2:56 remaining.
Costigan finished with eight draws as she broke Kailee Beal's 2012 record of 110. Cstigan, who also collected four ground balls and three caused turnovers in the game, has 115 draws on the season.
LEANNE MCCLOSKEY (four draws) and
DANA SUSSE each had four caused turnovers while Orban and Sapp totaled six and five ground balls respectively.
Sophomore goalkeeper
AMANDA MAGUIRE made six saves in the first half before
ALLYN LILIEN finished up with three saves.
