MIKE SAALFRANK stopped 11 shots while
JOSE HUERTA converted a penalty kick as Montclair State played to a 1-1 draw with Oneonta in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.
Both goals were scored in the second half within three minutes of each other. Montclair scored first when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 53
rd minute, which was converted by
JOSE HUERTA.
The Montclair goal seemed to wake up the Red Dragons who turned up the attack scoring the equalizer in the 56
th minute. Senior Austin Highes controlled a loose ball outside the box on the right side and sent a ball across to the far left post where classmate Nicholas Plate was able to volley a shot past a stretched out Saalfrank.
Oneonta came out with a 17-12 advantage in shots including a 12-4 advantage in the second half. Both teams managed only one shot each in the two overtime periods.
Friday's match was the fourth all-time meeting between the Red Hawks and Red Dragons and the third time the two played to a draw.
Montclair State returns to action on Sunday, September 2 with its home opener at MSU Soccer Park. The Red Hawks hosts New Rochelle at 3:00 pm in the first of back-to-back contests. MSU takes on Brooklyn College on Monday, September 3 at Noon.
