Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team crept back over the .500 mark on the year as the Red Hawks swept a tri-match from Lycoming and in-state rival FDU-Florham on Saturday at the Panzer Athletic Center.
The Red Hawks (5-4) defeated Lycoming in five sets before sweeping past FDU-Florham for its first victory against the Devils in 11 years. Montclair last beat FDU-Florham in 2007 and had dropped the last four meetings including two last season.
Freshmen
CARLY WATERMAN and
LEAH HIGGINS combined for 25 kills in the win against Lycoming (6-4) as MSU took the first two sets by identical 25-15 scores. The Warriors battled back for the next two forcing a decisive fifth set. Tied at 9-9,
NATALIA MAJKUT and
VICTORIA TENNON came up with a block between to Lycoming miscues for a three-point advantage. The lead got to 13-11 before the Red Hawks recorded the final two points, the last on a kill by Waterman to seal the match.
Majkut finished with nine kills and four blocks while Tennon had seven kills.
ASHLEY GRIFFITH had a double-double of 28 assists and 16 digs with sophomore
ALEXANDRA CAMPOS totaling 19 digs.
MEGAN O'ROURKE added 17 assists.
Higgins and Tennon finished with seven and six kills respectively as MSU took the match with FDU-Florham by games scores of 25-17, 25-15, 25-20. Waterman added five along with eight digs with
CAITLIN LANGE notching five blocks.
JILLIAN WILSON collected six kills with
SIYARA HERBERT and Waterman each getting five. Griffith picked up 30 assists along with seven digs. Campos led MSU with 10 digs.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, September 18 at home against New Jersey City University. First serve of the NJAC match at the Panzer Athletic Center is slated for 7:00 pm.
