Haverford, PA – Freshman
MADISON MARTINO connected on the decisive kick in the fourth round of penalty kicks as Montclair State captured the Haverford Kick Off Classic on Sunday. The Red Hawks (1-0-1) captured the shootout 2-1 following a 1-1 double-overtime draw.
Arcadia (1-0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 11
th minute as Mia Bertolami collected a loose ball at the top of the 18 and deposited into the net for her first goal of the year. That scored looked as though it would hold as Knights keeper Brianna Williams made eight saves in the first 45 minutes.
Montclair, which held a 17-5 advantage in shots including 9-2 in the first half, got the match level 3:06 into the second half on a 20-yard shot by junior
EMILY BEENDERS, her first of the new season.
In the first overtime, the Red Hawks came within inches of winning however a Beenders' shot 27 seconds in clanged off the crossbar as did one by
EMILY DEGEYTER three minutes later. Williams denied Beenders late in the period and neither team got a shot in the second OT.
DeGeyter gave MSU a 1-0 lead as she converted her attempt with Arcadia's Veronica Garcia making hers in the second round. Both squads failed in their third-round attempt before Martino gave the Red Hawks the lead in the fourth. The Knights missed their chance and both couldn't convert in the final round giving Montclair the championship.
