Montclair, NJ – Junior forward
NIXON SOGLO scored in the 67
th minute as Montclair State edged Rowan University 1-0 at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman
MICHAEL KNAPP picked up the assist as the Red Hawks (8-1-1) extended their winning streak to five games while picking up their second consecutive NJAC victory (2-0).
Montclair State outshot Rowan 9-4 in the first half with none of Profs' attempt going on goal. The Red Hawks chances were limited too however it nearly got one with 31:24 remaining as
JAKE SEAMAN sent a shot near the inside left post. The ball was heading in however defender Kevin Pereira was able to kick it away keeping the game scoreless.
Rowan's Kyle Dennis made four saves in the opening 45 minutes including a stop against Knapp with 12 minutes to go before halftime.
In the second half, Rowan began to apply pressure up top and got back-to-chances 12 minutes in. Ryan Campbell had a shot stopped by
MIKE SAALFRANK who then denied Kevin Primich 41 seconds later.
Montclair's goal would come nine minutes later as Knapp intercepted a clear by the Profs and chipped a ball into the box where Soglo was able to gather it on the right side before flicking a shot to the far post for his fifth goal of the season.
The Profs would get several chances to tie the game, the first coming with 17 minutes left as a cross from Ryan Campbell was just late enough to elude a charging Shane Doherty, who then later on made a drive and ripped a shot that just missed the upper left corner of the goal.
Montclair's
EDWARD SEAMAN thwarted another attempt with a sliding stop right in front of the goal and MSU got some help from the crossbar as Vincent Guzzo's shot with 1:31 to play clanged off the pipe.
Saalfrank finished with five saves for his fourth shutout of the year and the Red Hawks' seventh.
MSU returns to action on Wednesday, September 26 when it makes the short trek to Wayne, NJ for a 7:00 pm matchup with local and NJAC rival William Paterson.
