Freewalt Four Saves, Shutout as MSU Win First Conference Contest

Montclair, NJ – Junior EMILY BEENDERS had a hand in both goals as Montclair State got back on the winning track with a 2-0 victory over local rival William Paterson at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday evening.

GABRIELLE TANCREDI scored the other goal as the Red Hawks moved to 5-1-3 overall in addition to picking up its first NJAC victory of the year (1-1-1). Erin Hickey had four saves for the Pioneers, who fell to 4-6, 1-2 in conference play.

MSU took a 1-0 lead 6:37 into the contest on Tancredi's third goal of the season. Beenders collected a ball 25 yards on the left side and served it to the far side inside the 18 to Tancredi who collected the pass, and turned past a defender before lifting a shot over Hickey.

William Paterson got a chance three minutes later however LINDSAY FREEWALT came up with a save against the Pioneers' leading scorer Marisa Adelman and then did it again with a diving stop at the 13:38 mark.

Montclair took the one-goal lead into halftime and maintained it early in the second thanks in part to two more saves by Freewalt. The first came against Lorraine Moffitt in the 52nd minute with the second a stop on a shot by Danielle Dachowski seven minutes later. The Pioneers also got an unlucky break as Adelman's shot with 27:40 left clanged off the crossbar.

Beenders added an insurance goal with 10:03 to play. Senior MICHAELA KNOBLOCK made a run down the right sideline and punched a pass to the top of the box for Beenders who moved in to 10 yards before flicking a shot to the left side for her eighth goal of the year.

The Pioneers outshot MSU 15-12. Freewalt finished with four saves and recorded her third shutout of the season.

Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, September 29 at home against Rutgers-Newark with the NJAC contest beginning at 11:00 am.
