Red Hawks Edge Scarlet Raiders for 2nd Straight Win

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore KAITLYN SCRIVANICH scored on a header late in the first half lifting Montclair State to a 1-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday.

LINDSAY BATHMANN recorded an assist as the Red Hawks (6-1-3, 2-1-1 NJAC) picked up their second consecutive victory. Heidi Paulson had six saves for the Scarlet Raiders (5-6-1, 1-3 NJAC).

MSU got two early chances as Madsion Martino and EMILY DEGEYTER each put shots on goal that were stopped up by Paulson, who came up with another against MADDY MCLELLAND in the 23rd minute. Rutgers-Newark would get opportunities of its own with six minutes left in the first half. Ana Silveira fired a shot that Montclair's LINDSAY FREEWALT scooped up.

Montclair was awarded a corner kick with 1:29 left and took advantage. Bathmann served the ball from the right side across the goal to the far post where Scrivanich was able to head the ball in for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 Red Hawks lead.

The Red Hawks had a chance to increase its lead however Paulson saved a McLelland shot in the first five minutes. Freewalt denied Juliana Ceballos in the 64th minute and the MSU defense came up big blocking a pair of shots 10 minutes later. Freewalt added one more save with 13:40 left, snaring a shot by Ceballos.

MSU held a 15-12 advantage in shots and took three of the four corner kicks in the contest.
