KELLY WATSON each scored a goal as No. 11 Montclair State got past Muhlenberg College 2-1 at Scotty Wood Stadium on Friday evening.
AMBER HASLETT and
ELIZABETH CIMILLUCA recorded assists as the Red Hawks improved to 10-1 on the season. Stephi Rydgren had the goal for the Mules (3-5).
Muhlenberg got the first two shots of the game including one on cage that was stopped by
NICOLE ANDRIANI. MSU responded and appeared to take the lead in the 19
th minute with a goal off a penalty corner however that was disallowed keeping the game scoreless.
Montclair State would get on the board seven minutes later on Rossi's fifth goal of the season. Haslett slid a pass from the endline back to Rossi who banged in a shot from 10 yards out for the 1-0 lead. The Red Hawks had two chances to take the lead late in the half however Muhlenberg's Jordan Segrave made two saves in the final five minutes.
In the second half, MSU shut down the Mules not allowing a shot for the first 18-plus minutes. Segrave came up with a pair of saves over that same time period before Montclair got its second goal with 16:02 left. Watson collected her second of the year flipping a shot into the top of the cage.
Muhlenberg cut the deficit in half five minutes later on Rydgren's goal and the Mules would get two chances to tie the game. Andriani saved a shot by Rachel Richards with just over two minutes left and denied Emily Davis with 55 seconds remaining to preserve the win.
Andriani finished with three saves for Montclair, which outshot Muhlenberg 12-5.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, October 2 when it opens up New Jersey Athletic Conference play. Montclair hosts Kean University at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm. It is the first meeting between the teams since last year's NJAC Tournament semifinal won by the Cougars.
