Montclair, NJ – Freshman
CARLY WATERMAN posted 11 kills with
NATALIA MAJKUT and
LEAH HIGGINS each added five as Montclair State made it a successful home opener with a three-set victory over Mount St. Vincent at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.
Senior
ASHLEY GRIFFITH recorded 14 assists and seven digs as the Red Hawks moved to 2-3 on the season after posting set scores of 25-11, 25-18 and 25-14. Montclair hit .342 for the match and served seven aces with Waterman and
ALEXANDRA CAMPOS getting three and two respectively.
MSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set and grew the advantage to 16-8 as Waterman registered a kill. Campos served three straight points to widen the lead to 21-9 and Montclair closed out the set on a kill from
SCHYLER WHITE for a 1-0 lead.
Montclair's solid hitting continued in the second set and turned a 5-5 tie into a four-point lead as
JILLIAN WILSON, Waterman, Higgins and
CAITLIN LANGE each put down kills making the score 9-5. The Dolphins (0-1) pulled within 15-14 before
MEGAN O'ROURKE served seven consecutive points to give MSU a 22-14 advantage. White had two kills in the spurt with the Red Hawks taking advantage of four CSMV attack errors.
In the third, Montclair recorded eight of the first nine points and led 12-2.
SARAH GONCZLIK made it a 20-7 score with a kill. Mount St. Vincent would get as close as 24-14 however a final Dolphin attack error closed out the match for the Red Hawks.
O'Rourke finished with nine assists and four digs with Wilson contributing four kills. Campos led MSU with eight digs.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, September 8 with a road contest at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
