KIM CALLOWAY scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds however William Paterson used a strong second half to knock off Montclair State 75-62 at the WPU Rec Center on Wednesday evening.
CeCe Green and Julie Rovito finished with 24 and 23 points respectively as the Pioneers (9-8, 5-5 NJAC) earned a split of the season series with the Red Hawks (11-6, 7-3 NJAC).
ALEX MCKINNON had 17 points for MSU.
Montclair held slim margins early in the first quarter before closing out the opening period with an 8-0 run. Tied 12-12, Calloway it two at the line and a three by
TAYLOR BROWN with 1:02 left gave the Red Hawks a 17-12 advantage. Brown hit again with six seconds remaining as Montclair State led 20-12 heading in to the second.
The Red Hawks remained in the lead and built its largest lead at 35-22 with 4:08 to play after McKinnon converted a three-point play. But William Paterson was able to cut the deficit to five as Rovito scored on a layup with 22 seconds ending the first half with Montclair holding a 38-31 lead.
The Pioneers continued to chip away at the lead in the third before ending the period on an 11-4 run. Trailing 43-39, Brianna Brooks hit two at the line and a layup from Rovito tied the score at 43-43. Brooks put WPU in front and Rovito followed with a field goal before Alisa Giordano's three-pointer with 1:23 remaining helped the Pioneers to a 50-47 lead heading into the final quarter.
MSU got within a point twice in the early fourth, the last coming at 55-54 after a
KAYLA BUSH layup. Brooks answered with a field goal and two foul shots by Carolyn Hill made the score 59-54. Green's basket got the lead to seven points and Giordano's two free throws widened the lead to 65-56 with 2:28 to go. Green extended the advantage to double-digits (69-58) with Montclair getting no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Brown had eight points for the Red Hawks with freshman
JULIA SUTTON adding seven. Bush pulled down a team-best seven boards.
Montclair State is back home for its next contest on Saturday, January 19 hosting Kean University at 3:00 pm.
