Early Deficit To Tough for Red Hawks to Overcome

McKinnon Posts Career-Best 25 in Loss to Kean

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team dropped its second straight game on Monday evening as the Red Hawks fell to Kean University 83-65 at the Panzer Athletic Center in their makeup contest from January 19.

Junior forward ALEX MCKINNON scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed six rebounds however MSU could not dig themselves out of a first-half deficit and fell to 12-8 overall, 8-5 in the NJAC. Shannon McCoy netted a game-high 30 points for the Cougars (9-11, 6-7 NJAC), who gained a split of the season series.

Montclair never led in the contest and was deadlocked at 10-10 in the first after JULIA SUTTON hit a three-pointer with 2:54 to play. Kean answered with a six-point run and led 16-12 heading into the second. KIM CALLOWAY opened the second quarter with a field goal for the Red Hawks but the Kean slowly extended its lead to 30-16 with seven minutes left on two free throws by Payce Lange.

A free throw by Calloway made the score 39-27 with two minutes to play before Kean tallied the final nine points to take a 48-27 lead into the break.

Trailing by as many as 22 points in the third, the Red Hawks were able to whittle the deficit down to 10 by the end of the period. CERYS MACLELLAND scored all nine of her points in the period as Montclair pulled to 62-52.

DOMONIQUE WIRSING began the final period with two free throws helping Montclair creep within 62-54 13 seconds in. But Casey Filiault drained a three from the right wing a minute later igniting a 17-5 run over the next seven minutes by the Cougars pushing the lead to 79-59 with 2:36 left.

MacLelland added 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals for Montclair. Callowed added eight points and seven rebounds with Brown totaling seven points and six caroms.

Montclair State will look to snap its losing streak on Wednesday, January 30 when it travels to Jersey City, NJ to face New Jersey City University at 6:00 pm.
