Jersey City, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team put four players in double figures as the Red Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak with a 62-43 victory over New Jersey City University at the John J. Moore Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore guards
TAYLOR BROWN and
KIM CALLOWAY finished with 16 and 13 points respectively as MSU (13-8, 9-5 NJAC) clamped down defensively on the Gothic Knights (4-17, 1-13 NJAC) as it swept the season series while running its winning streak against NJCU to 32 games dating back to February 2002.
Montclair limited the host Knights to just 22 percent shooting (15-of-66) in the game including 3-of-17 behind the arc. The Red Hawks limited the NJAC's all-time leading scorer Marajiah Bacon to a season-low 11 points – 14 below her season average which currently leads the conference.
The Red Hawks never trailed in the contest and grabbed a quick 6-0 lead as Brown and
CERYS MACLELLAND opened the game with back-to-back three pointers. Montclair would get up by as many as nine points twice before settling for an 18-12 advantage after the first quarter.
In the second, MSU held NJCU to just three points and none over the final six minutes of the half. After Miesha Bacon netted the only field goal by the Knights, Calloway hit a jumper and Brown drained a three-pointer for a 27-15 lead with 3:39 left. Calloway recorded the final five points including a three-pointer with 1:21 to play as Montclair State took a 32-15 halftime lead into the break.
The Red Hawks led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before NJCU battled back cutting the deficit to down to eight. Miesha Bacon hit two free throws as time expired trimming the Montclair lead to 46-38 heading into the fourth.
Montclair State led by that same eight-point margin with 7:39 to in the fourth before closing out the game with a 14-1 spurt. Sophomore
KAYLA BUSH scored six of the first nine points including four in a row for a 57-42 advantage. Calloway had a three in the run with
TRISHA PETERSON getting the final bucket with 36 seconds left.
Calloway grabbed seven rebounds while Brown registered six along with a pair of assists. Bush and
ALEX MCKINNON each totaled 11 points. Senior
DOMONIQUE WIRSING pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds as Montclair State outrebounded NJCU, 53-27 including 16 offensive rebounds that turned into 17 second-chance points.
The Red Hawks are back at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday, February 2. Montclair will host its Alumni Day taking on first-place Rowan University at 3:00 pm.
