Montclair Roars Back in Second Half to Down Rutgers-Camden, 86-65

Red Hawks Find Shooting Touch in 2nd Half; Hoffman Collects 30

Camden, NJ – Junior guard AKBAR HOFFMAN hits eight three-pointers and finished with 30 points as Montclair State erased a 10-point halftime deficit for an 86-65 victory at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday evening.

Senior forward JORDAN ROBERSON posted a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds as the Red Hawks (11-4, 6-2 NJAC) outscored the Scarlet Raptors (2-13, 2-6 NJAC), 55-24 in the second half. Junior guard JUSTIN PORTER had 17 points.

It was a tale of two halves for both teams. Rutgers-Camden shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field in the first half including 7-of-14 from behind the arc. Conversely, MSU struggled hitting just 8-of-29 attempts (27 percent) and only two of 14 attempts from three-point range.

A close contest through the first half, a 7-1 spurt by Rutgers-Camden gave the hosts a 25-16 lead after Kyle Goodson Jr. with 9:39 remaining. Montclair cut that back to 29-25 however Ian McCarthy hit a three to push the lead to 32-25 and a three-pointer by Goodson at the buzzer sent the Raptors into the locker room with a 41-31 lead.

But everything changed in the second half as Montclair and Rutgers-Camden completely reversed roles. Over the final 20 minutes, the Red Hawks found their shooting touch going 17-of-26 overall, 12-of-19 (63 percent) from behind the arc. The Raptors meanwhile could not continue their shooting prowess making 6-of-26 from the floor and misfiring on 10 of 11 attempts from three-point range.

MSU began the half with a 14-0 run as Hoffman and Porter each hit a pair of threes putting Montclair in front 45-41. The Red Hawks increased the lead taking a 55-46 lead with 14:54 to play on a three-pointer by MYLES MITCHELL-WHITE. Rutgers-Camden scored the next six point to cut the lead to three but Hoffman countered that with two straight makes from three-point range boosting the lead back to 61-52.

The Raptors were able to get within 61-56 on a three-point play but Trai Greer however JOSEPH RADI netted a three to spark a 7-0 run helping Montclair State to a 68-56 advantage with 7:16 to play.

Mitchell-White had five points, five rebounds and seven assists for MSU, which dominated the Raptors on the board, 49-19, including 18 offensive caroms. Emedoh chipped in with nine points and six rebounds.

Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, January 12 hosting Stockton University at the Panzer Athletic Center. Tipoff of the NJAC contest is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
