Camden, NJ – Rutgers-Camden's Fatimah Williams scored 18 points leading three players in double figures as the Scarlet Raptors knocked off Montclair State 57-45 on Wednesday evening.
Gabby Greene and Wykira Johnson-Kelly had 17 points apiece as Rutgers-Camden (8-6, 4-4 NJAC) snapped a 16-year drought against the Red Hawks (10-5, 6-2 NJAC) winning for the first time since February 2003.
Guards
TAYLOR BROWN and
JULIA SUTTON scored 10 points each for Montclair.
The Scarlet Raptors led 8-7 after one quarter however a 9-2 run to open the second period helped the Red Hawks to a six-point lead. Sutton drained a three to put MSU in front and
CERYS MACLELLAND followed with another before a third triple, this one by
TRISHA PETERSON gave MSU a 16-10 advantage with 7:13 left.
Montclair State led 17-12 until the Raptors closed out the half with a 14-0 run. Tamara Johnson ignited the run with a three-pointer with Greene tying the game at 17-17 on a layup. Williams registered the next six points and a three by Greene allowed Rutgers-Camden to take a 26-17 lead into the halftime.
Johnson-Kelly's three-point play early in the third got the lead to double digits before the Red Hawks were able to cut the deficit to 37-34 with 18 seconds remaining after Brown connected twice from the line.
ALEX MCKINNON hit from behind the arc to keep Montclair within four, 42-38 in the fourth however Greene answered with a three of her own and Ariel Robinson's layup pushed the lead to nine with Johnson-Kelly's three giving the Raptors a 50-38 lead with 4:17 left.
McKinnon finished with eight points and 15 rebounds for Montclair State. Peterson totaled six points and five rebounds with
KAYLA BUSH pulling down five boards.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, January 12 as it makes its 2019 home debut at the Panzer Athletic Center. The Red Hawks host Stockton University at 3:00 pm.
