Montclair, NJ – Junior CARLY WATERMAN recorded 27 kills and 15 digs as Montclair State picked up a pair of victories knocking off Kenyon and Moravian at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.
The Red Hawks (16-5) were four-set winners against Kenyon taking the match 25-18, 25-21, 17-25, 28-26. MSU then swept past the Greyhounds (9-16)
Waterman had 17 kills and six digs as Montclair jumped out to 8-3 lead versus the Lords in the first set. Kenyon would even the match at eight as the first set remained tightly contested.
With MSU leading 15-13, it went on a 5-0 lead to take a commanding 20-13 lead on its way to a 25-18 first set win.
Montclair State registered its highest hitting percentage of the match in the second set, tallying 12 digs while hitting at a .321 clip. The Red Hawks only had three errors in the set.
After dropping the third set, Montclair found itself up 19-9 but had to fend off a furious rally by the Lords. Kenyon went on a 10-3 run to trim the lead to 22-19 in favor of MSU.
Kenyon ended up taking a 25-24 lead in the set, forcing the Red Hawks to break the Lords serve. LEAH HIGGINS recorded a kill to tie it up at 25 but Kenyon would take another one-point lead after a kill by Mackenzie Bruzzio.
The Red Hawks answered with three straight points to hold on for the four-set win. Meghan O'Rourke posted 37 assists along with four digs in the first victory.
Against Moravian, Montclair put together three strong sets to earn the sweep on the day.
Waterman was one dig shy of a double-double while posting 10 kills and nine digs in the second game.
MSU jumped out to a hot start, leading 8-2 in the opening set. The big lead set the tone for the Red Hawks as they prevailed for a 25-14 win in set one. Selea Herber's ace and a hitting error on the Greyhounds gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead.
With the second set tied at 12, MSU went on an 8-2 run to give MSU a 20-14 lead. MSU capitalized on two Greyhound errors for the commanding 2-0 lead.
The Red Hawks continued the momentum and led 5-1 in the third set. MSU never looked back as JILLIAN WILSON's kill capped the 2-0 day.
GIANNA ARIAS chipped in with eight kills and three blocks in the win over Moravian. SIYARA HERBERT and MADDIE VALKO each recorded 11 digs for MSU.
Montclair State returns to the court on Tuesday, October 15 with a home contest against Stockton. The NJAC matchup starts at 7 p.m. from the Panzer Athletic Center.
