Women's Soccer Earns NJAC Bye; Naughter Becomes All-Time Winningest Coach

DeGeyter, Senatore Help Red Hawks Past Cougars, 2-1

Union, NJ – The Montclair State women's soccer team celebrated two milestones on Wednesday evening as the Red Hawks slipped past Kean University, 2-1 at Alumni Stadium.

Sophomore EMILY DEGEYTER and freshman SAMANTHA SENATORE combined for both goals as MSU (12-5-2, 7-1-1 NJAC) earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming NJAC Tournament. Montclair will face the winner of Saturday's first-round contest between No. 3 seed Stockton and sixth-seeded Rutgers-Camden in the semifinals on Tuesday, November 5 at MSU Soccer Park.

The victory was also a special one for head coach Pat Naughter, who became the all-time winningest coach with his 137th career triumph. Naughter, in his 10th season, surpassed Eileen Blair for the top spot and is now 137-44-33 since taking over which includes two NJAC championships and five trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

DeGeyter and Senatore helped give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead at the 14:09 mark with DeGeyter collecting her second goal of the season.  Montclair would get two chances to extend the lead however the Cougars' Marissa Cook came up with stops against Senatore and CALLIE BOHUS.

Despite holding Kean without a shot through the first 45 minute of the match, the Cougars tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick by Deana Abdou in the 29th minute.

Tied at 1-1, Kean got the first scoring attempt of the second half as Kayley Brooks put forth a shot on net that was saved by PHOEBE BLEDSOE. Neither team would get solid chances until the 64th minute when the Red Hawks went back in front on DeGeyter's second goal off a corner kick with Senatore recording her second assists.

Bledsoe kept the 2-1 lead intact as she made one stop versus Emily Bretschneider seven minutes after the go-ahead goal which turned out to be the last attempt on frame the Cougars would get the rest of the way.

The Red Hawks outshot Kean 17-7 and took all eight corner kicks in the match.
