ELIZABETH CIMILLUCA scored the game-winning goal in the shootout as Montclair (7-3) upended Muhlenberg 4-3 on Friday evening at Sprague field. The Red Hawks overcame a two-goal deficit to return to the win column.
KELLY WATSON registered a hat trick to spark the Red Hawk offense.
KELLIE VIZZUSO assisted on two of the goals as Cimiluca added an assist before netting the game winner following both extra periods.
After a scoreless first period, the Mules (7-3) took an early two goal advantage in the second quarter.
Rachel Richards finished off a pass by Morgan Tietz to put Muhlenberg in front 1-0 in the second quarter. Tietz dished out her second assist, with Sarah Raab burying the shot in the back of the net to give the Mules a 2-0 lead at the half.
Montclair out shot Muhlenberg 7-3 in the opening half but was unable to cash in.
Watson was able to get the scoring started to open the third, trimming the lead to 2-1. Muhlenberg would answer the Red Hawk goal as Richards netted her second of the game to give the Mules another two-goal cushion.
Watson would take over for the Red Hawks, scoring once more in the third quarter and netting the only goal in the fourth to force overtime.
Muhlenberg outshot MSU 5-2 during both overtime periods but neither team was able to cash in.
After three consecutive misses in the shootout, Cimiluca was able to wrap around the goalie and score the game-winner for Montclair. NICOLE ANDRIANI stood tall in net forcing five-straight misses in the shootout to preserve the win.
Montclair has a quick turn around and will face York at 4 pm on Saturday evening at Sprague Field
