Men's Lacrosse Edged by DeSales in Double-OT, 14-13

Red Hawks Comeback Falls Short; Haemmerle, West Five Goals Each

Center Valley, PA - Justin Monaghan scored the game-winning goal 50 seconds into the second overtime lifting DeSales University to 14-13 victory over Montclair State in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening.

Zach Bowen tallied six goals for the Bulldogs (1-0), who squandered a huge first-quarter lead but recovered for the win in the first meeting between the teams in 13 years. DeSales snapped a three-game losing streak to MSU winning for the first time since April 2001, a 10-6 victory at home.

Senior MATT HAEMMERLE and freshman JESSE JAMES WEST each scored five goals for the Red Hawks (0-1), who battled back from a 7-0 deficit in the opening period and tied the game in the final minute of regulation.

The Bulldogs used the first half of the opening quarter to put their goals on the board. Bowen collected four straight, the last coming with 9:08 to play making the score 5-0.  His fifth goal two minutes later got the DeSales advantage to seven before Montclair State started to chip away at that.

West scored four in a row, including two-man-up scores in a span of 60 seconds. Haemmerle recorded his first with 3:27 to go as MSU got within 7-5. Tom Connors ended the Montclair run giving the Bulldogs an 8-5 lead after one period.

DAN BELLEZZA and CHRISTIAN BOYLE began the second with goals for the Red Hawks making it a one-score contest. Bowen's sixth goal and one from Joe Neggia allowed DeSales to go into halftime with a 10-7 lead.

That same three-goal margin was still there going into the final quarter until Haemmerle scored back-to-back 39 seconds apart. The second goal, a man-up tally made the score 12-11 with 11:53 left. Neggia pushed the lead back to two goals 51 seconds later with Boyle's second with 7:49 left putting the DeSales lead back to a goal.

Still down by a goal, Montclair got possession with 1:45 to play. West fired a shot 11 seconds later that was stopped by Matt Barry. TYLER MCCREERY scooped up the ground ball and got off another that hit the post with 72 seconds remaining. Following a timeout with a minute on the clock, SEAN STADTLANDER went wide with his attempt however MSU was able to maintain possession. Haemmerle tied its eight seconds later with his fifth of the game. DeSales would win the ensuing faceoff and got a shot off with six seconds left that went wide.

The Bulldogs got the first chance to win the game in the extra period but Monaghan's shot was wide right turning the ball over to MSU. Back the other way came the Red Hawks, who came within inches of winning the game however West's shot as time expired clanged off the crossbar sending the game to another extra period.

Colin Corrado won the faceoff in the second OT, got the ball to Matt Brown, who found Monaghan for the game-winning goal.

Bellezza had three assists for Montclair. KYLE MATTHEWS went 20-of-30 on faceoffs with nine ground balls. JACK CARDEW had six saves for the Red Hawk with MATTHEW MCLAREN had two.

The Red Hawks are off until Saturday, February 23 when they play their home opener at Sprague Field. Montclair State will face 10th-ranked Dickinson College at 3:00 pm.
