Men's Lacrosse Drops Home Opener to No. 10 Dickinson

Boyle, West Three Goals Each for Montclair

Montclair, NJ – Dickinson College's Jack O'Connell scored two of his five goals during a pivotal third quarter helping the 10th-ranked Red Devils to a 16-10 victory over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Joel Mayo tallied three times as Dickinson moved to 2-0 on the year. CHRISTIAN BOYLE and JESSE JAMES WEST each had three goals for Montclair (0-2).

The teams each put a goal on the board before two straight by the Red Devils made the score 3-1 with 6:37 to go in the opening quarter. Boyle registered a man-up goal for MSU with O'Connell getting hit second with 25 seconds to play as the visitors led 4-2 after one period.

MSU opened the second with four in a row, including man-up tallied by Boyle and DAN BELLEZZA in the first minute forging a 4-4 tie. Bellezza scored again two minutes later and West's goal at the midpoint gave Montclair State a 6-4 lead. Dickinson answered with a three-goal run capped by Nate Usich, whose goal with 1:35 remaining before halftime sent the Red Devils into intermission with a 7-6 advantage.

That run continued in the third as O'Connell scored twice and then set up Mayo with 12:31 remaining expanding the Dickinson lead to 10-6. SEAN STADTLANDER stopped the run a minute later however Brodie Phillips scored 34 seconds later and after another Red Devil goal, tallied with 2:52 showing making the score 13-7.

Nick Goles doubled up the score to being the fourth. Boyle and West helped cut the lead back to 14-9 with 7:54 to play but Goles and O'Connell scored seconds apart for a 16-9 lead. MATT HAEMMERLE collected the Red Hawks' final goal with 2:13 left.

TYLER MCCREERY had two assists for MSU. KYLE MATTHEWS was 15-of-27 with four ground balls. NICK SNOW and VINNY SCARLATELLA forced a pair of turnovers each. WILSON SMITH topped all Red Hawks with six ground balls while Snow scooped up five. JACK CARDEW had 15 saves for Montclair.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, February 27 in Poughkeepsie, NY taking on Vassar College at 5:00 pm.
