Kissimmee, FL – For the second consecutive day the Montclair State softball team played to identical scores with mixed results again as the Red Hawks split their contests with Gettysburg College and Newbury College at The Spring Games on Thursday.
MSU fell to Gettysburg, 9-1 but flipped the script in the second contest with a 9-1 victory against Newbury squaring its record at 3-3 on its 10-game trip. Montclair faced Marywood University at 12:30 pm on Friday, March 15 followed by a 2:45 game against Lawrence University.
The Bullets (4-4) erupted for six runs in the top of the first inning sending 11 batters to the plate. Shelby Baker drove in the first run with Rachel Julie delivering the big blow with a bases-clearing triple. Meredith Taylor belted a solo home run in the second with Julie adding a two-run shot to account for the final Gettysburg runs.
Junior
BLAKE SAPERSTEIN accounted for the lone Red Hawk run in the bottom of the second with a solo homer, her first of the season.
Montclair would bounce back in the next contest as
AMBER POWERS went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Righthander
NICOLE MAJEWSKI (2-1) allowed three hits and one run, striking out four and walking four to earn her second victory.
MSU got on the board in the second as Powers smacked a two-run single scoring
ALEXA PENNA and
TAYLOR BROWN. Penna added to the lead the following inning with a two-run double with Powers' RBI single pushing the lead to 5-0. Montclair would get one more in the inning for the six-run advantage and tacked on three in the fifth.
VALENTINA CUCCI,
KATIE DEBELL and Samantha DiClementi each drove in a run.
