Allentown, PA – Sophomore
BRITTANY COSTIGAN scored five times while
SYDNEE SAPP added four goals as Montclair State snapped its two-game losing streak with a 19-9 win at Muhlenberg College on Tuesday afternoon. The game was a rescheduled contest that was postponed on Friday due to a rain and lightning storm.
Four other players tallied two goals each as the Red Hawks moved to 4-3 on the year with their second straight victory against the Mules (3-2). MSU leads the all-time series 6-3. Amanda Tullo scored three times for Muhlenberg.
Tied at 1-1 through the first 10 minutes, Montclair scored four of the next five goals starting with Sapp's 11
th of the year with 19:10 to pay. Costigan collected another two minutes later and scored again after a Tullo goal making the score 4-2. A
CHELSEA ORBAN goal with 10 minutes to play made it a three-goal advantage.
Victoria Friedel cut the deficit back to 5-3 for the Mules but Montclair countered with back-to-back goals by
AMBER GONZALEZ and Sapp who scored again with 3:59 to play giving the Red Hawks an 8-4 lead. The Mules tallied the next two goals, however
KYLE GRAVER connected with 11 seconds left as MSU led 9-6 at the break.
MEGAN MAHLSTADT opened the second half with goal for Montclair extending the lead to 10-6 Muhlenberg closed the gap to two goals twice, the last coming with 15:09 on Tullo's goal for an 11-9 MSU lead. That would be as close as the hosts would get as the Red Hawks reeled off the final nine goals with eight coming in a four-minute span.
Sapp started it with 13:35 remaining with Costigan connecting 31 seconds later and then with 12 minutes to play for a 14-9 lead.
ERIN CAMPBELL registered a goal followed by one from Costigan. Mahlstadt and Gonzalez scored 27 seconds apart capping the run as MSU led 18-9 with 9:02 left. Freshman
KARLI NEVARD got the final goal, her first career score.
Costigan added 12 draws and five ground balls to complete her outstanding day.
LEANNE MCCLOSKEY chipped in with five draws, two caused turnovers amd four ground balls.
AMANDA MAGUIRE and
ALLYN LILIEN split the game finishing with three and six saves, respectively.
MSU is off until Saturday, March 23 when it begins an Upstate New York trip. The Red Hawks face The College at Brockport on Saturday at Noon followed by a Sunday, March 24 contest at SUNY-Geneseo.
