Montclair, NJ – Sophomore
BRITTANY COSTIGAN scored three times and broke her own single-game record with 19 draw controls as Montclair State pulled away from FDU-Florham in the second half for a 17-6 victory at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
CHELSEA ORBAN added three goals and three assists as the Red Hawks saw eight different players score as they moved over the .500 mark at 6-5. MSU also improved to 11-6 all-time against its in-state rival including victories in each of the last eight meetings.
Montclair opened the game with the first four goals. Costigan and
SYDNEE SAPP scored 20 seconds apart in the first two minutes with Orban setting up
AMBER GONZALEZ for a 3-0 lead with 24:57 to play. Graver tallied 19 seconds later for the four-goal advantage. After the Devils (3-5) got on the board, Sapp and Gonzalez each found the back of the net again extending the lead to 6-1.
Caitlyn Damon's free position attempt score with 13:41 to play got FDU-Florham within four however Orban recorded her first goal and then set up
JESSICA ANDREULA with 5:56 to play increasing the lead to 8-2. Olivia Chaoush got the final goal of the half for the Devils, who trailed by five at the break.
Orban opened the half with the first goal and assisted on a
KYLE GRAVER goal pushing the lead to 10-4. After FDU-Florham got one back, the Red Hawks answered with three straight, the last by Mahlstadt with 19:54 left making the score 13-4.
The Devils would score two of the next three before MSU finished off the contest with the final three goals. Costigan had the first and the last with Gonzalez scoring off a
CASEY PROVOST helper in between.
Costigan broke her own single-game draw mark set last year at Rutgers-Camden when she pulled in 13. It was the fifth time this season that Costigan, who ranks 22
nd in Division III in that category, had 10 or more in a contest. She also forced three turnovers as did senior
LEANNE MCCLOSKEY, who totaled nine ground balls. Megan Gorman had three caused turnovers. Goalkeepers
AMANDA MAGUIRE and
ALLYN LILIEN each stopped two shots.
Montclair State is now off until Saturday, April 6 when it heads to Ewing, NJ to face No. 14 The College of New Jersey in its NJAC opener at 1:00 pm.
