Galloway, NJ – Stockton University scored all six goals in the first quarter and that proved to be the difference as the Ospreys knocked off Montclair State 15-9 at G. Larry James Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Luc Swedlund scored three times as Stockton improved to 11-2 on the season, 3-0 in Colonial States Athletic Conference play with the victory.
MATT HAEMMERLE and
TYLER MCCREERY each scored twice for Montclair State (5-6, 1-1 CSAC).
In a matchup of the league's preseason No. 1 and No. 2 teams, Stockton provided all the scoring in the opening period. Colin Wharton scored 15 seconds into the contest and
ERIC D'ARMINIO scored with 12:26 left for a 2-0 lead. J.J. McKenna connected a minute later and Peter Burke's goal near the 10-minute mark put the Ospreys up 4-0. Eric Anderson added a goal with 6:55 to play and Joey Tiernan's unassisted tally in the final 90 seconds gave Stockton the 6-0 advantage.
The Red Hawks got on the board early in the second as
JESSE JAMES WEST found the back of the 1:39 into the second. Haemmerle followed with 10:49 left cutting the deficit to 6-2. However, Stockton
got those two back and one more. Swedlund netted the last two as the Ospreys held a 9-2 lead at halftime.
MSU opened the second half with three straight.
DAN BELLEZZA scored with 12:55 remaining and goals by
MICHAEL FERDINANDI and
WILSON SMITH 41 seconds apart made the score 9-5. The Ospreys then pulled away with a six-goal run over the next 15 minutes bridging the final two periods. Dante Poli and Eric Ellis recorded man-up goals and Swedlund's third with 8:13 left in the fourth widened the lead to 15-5.
The Red Hawks got the last four goals. Haemmerle had the first with McCreery tallying the next two.
JOE LARACCA scored the final goal with 1:13 to play.
WILSON SMITH recorded a team-best eight ground balls for the Red Hawks.
MATTHEW MCLAREN made 10 saves.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 13 with a 3:00 pm CSAC matchup at Bryn Athyn College.
