Montclair, NJ – Senior midfielder Taylor Gretz scored the game-winning goal 1:05 into overtime lifting Rowan University to a 9-8 victory over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Gretz and Mikala Gillespie each had three goals as the Profs (9-5, 4-1 NJAC) scored the final four goals while shutting down MSU for the final 30:28 of the contest.
CHELSEA ORBAN,
SYDNEE SAPP and
BRITTANY COSTIGAN had a pair of goals each for the Red Hawks (8-7, 2-2 NJAC), who had their two game-winning streak snapped with the loss.
Gillespie and Gretz alternated scoring and assisting the first two goals of the game as Rowan led 2-0 just 45 second into the game.
KYLE GRAVER got Montclair on the board a little over a minute later, however Gillespie scored again with 23:48 to play putting the Profs up 3-1.
Montclair State countered with three straight to take the lead. Sapp got the first with 17:41 left and Costigan scored ahead of the possession clock horn before an
ERIN CAMPBELL score with 13:54 to play gave the Red Hawks a 4-3 lead.
Elise Cohan knotted the game again 35 seconds later but again Montclair put together a three-goal run, all three set up by
MEGAN MAHLSTADT. Costigan got the first with 11:10 left with Sapp scoring 40 seconds later. Orban connected with 7:07 to go giving MSU a 7-4 lead. Liz Kramer connected for Rowan trimming the Red Hawks' lead to 7-5 at the break.
Orban scored 37 seconds into the second half extending the lead to 8-5 however that would be the last score for MSU, which was held to just five shots the rest of the way.
Meanwhile the Profs patiently made their comeback. Gillespie scored three minutes after the Orban goal and Jess Havers' score with 11:20 remaining got Rowan within 8-7. Gretz tied the game with just under nine minutes left.
In the overtime, Gretz was able to pull in the opening draw and after moving the ball around cut across in front from the right side before firing a shot inside the left post for the game-winner.
MEGHAN GORMAN forced four turnovers and scooped up four ground balls while defender
LEANNE MCCLOSKEY pulled in five draws.
AMANDA MAGUIRE stopped eight shots in the first half with
ALLYN LILIEN making five saves.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, April 23 hosting Ramapo College at Sprague Field beginning at 7pm. It will be Senior Night for MSU which will honor its seven –
