Baseball Splits with NJCU, Snaps Losing Streak

Pickus, Silva Help Deliver 5-1 Victory

Union, NJ – Freshman MATT PICKUS pitched 6 1/3 solid innings before JUSTIN SILVA finished off the game with 2 2/3 scoreless innings as Montclair State earned a split of its doubleheader with a 5-1 victory over New Jersey City University at Kean University's Jim Hynes Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Senior outfielder NICK MARTINEZ was 4-for-5 with an RBI as the Red Hawks (11-22, 2-12 NJAC) bounced back from a 5-2 loss in the opener. The win snapped Montclair State's 14-game losing streak as it got its first win since a 5-4 triumph over FDU-Florham on April 2.

Montclair State scored the first five runs in the second contest starting with the game's first in the second innings. Catcher BRAD EDWARDS singled with two outs and went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on an error for the 1-0 lead.  MSU added to the lead in the fourth as DANIEL CLEMENTE tripled down the right field line with one out scoring ANDREW OLLWERTHER. DONALD GONNELLI followed with a sacrifice fly for a three-run advantage.

Edwards walked with the bases loaded in the fifth innings for a 4-0 MSU lead. Martinez singled in the infield in the sixth giving the Red Hawks a five-run cushion.

The Gothic Knights (13-15, 3-10 NJAC) scratched out a run in the sixth however that would the only run NJCU would get as Silva came on the seventh and struck out three in registering the final eight outs of the contest.

Pickus struck out six and allowed five hits in picking up his first collegiate win. BRODY LABBE went 3-for-5 while JOE NORTON, Ollwerther, Clemente and Edwards each had two hits.

In the opener, NJCU struck early scoring twice in each of the first two innings for a 4-0 lead. The Gothic Knights added a fifth run in the seventh before Montclair scored twice in the ninth. JUSTIN BATES scampered home on a wild pitch while CHRISTOPHER WALKER added an RBI single.

Fernando Guerrero (3-2) got the victory as he kept MSU off the board in his seven innings or work. Guerrero struck out four and walked three while allowing six hits. Kyle McCabe recorded the final two outs for his first save of the year. Lefthander BRIAN REISS (2-4) took the loss.

Labbe was 4-for-4 in the contest with Clemente going 3-for-5 at the plate.
