Montclair, NJ – Union College's Keaton McCann scored twice as the 20
th-ranked Dutchmen put eight of the first nine goals on the board then held off a Montclair State rally late in an 11-7 victory at Frank Bailey Field on Wednesday afternoon.
John Edmonds and Hayden Frey also scored two goals as Union improved to 8-1 on the season. Senior
DAN BELLEZZA recorded three goals with
TYLER MCCREERY adding two for the Red Hawks, who fell to 4-5 on the year. Four of MSU's losses this season have been to Top 20 teams.
Aiden Flood gave Union a 1-0 lead in the first five minutes before McCreery found the back of the net with 6:02 left in the first quarter knotting the game at 1-1. Kieran McGovern then started an eight-goal run over the next two-plus quarters as the Dutchmen built an 8-1 lead with 13:18 remaining in the third quarter.
The Red Hawks began to chip away at the deficit a minute later. Bellezza scored off an assist from
JESSE JAMES WEST and
AARON LOSCHIAVO connected 21 seconds later making the score 8-3. Union however countered that with two goals of its own. Frey and Kerry Lyne scored 45 seconds apart boosting the advantage back to 10-3 with 9:45 to go. Bellezza registered a man-up goal two minutes later as MSU headed into the fourth down six.
Edmonds' goal 46 seconds into the fourth upped the lead to 11-4. Montclair State would get the final three goals, all in the final five minutes. Bellezza got the first with 4:58 left with
JOE LARACCA scoring the final two goals, the last coming with nine ticks to play.
MATTHEW MCLAREN stopped 15 shots for MSU with defender
NICK SNOW registering two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
KYLE MATTHEWS led Montclair State with four ground balls with
WILSON SMITH, McLaren, Bellezza and
TIM ELFONTE each scooping up three.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, April 6 with their first contest in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Montclair hosts Rosemont College at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
