Baseball Swept at Stockton

Martinez Four Hits, Walker Home Run for Red Hawks

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University got a walk-off in the 11th inning of Game 1 and then used scoring innings early and late in the second contest as the Ospreys swept Montclair State in an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday.

Andrew Slinger singled home the game winner in the opener for a 4-3 victory and then got 7 2/3 solid innings from Sean O'Rourke as Stockton (13-6, 3-2 NJAC) finished off the sweep with an 8-3 triumph. NICK MARTINEZ had four hits while CHRISTOPHER WALKER belted a home run for Montclair State (10-11, 1-4 NJAC), which has dropped its last three contests.

Stockton got a run in the first inning of the opener however the Red Hawks answered that in the second. Martinez tripled and scored as the throw to third base got away knotting the game at 1-1. Walker homered putting MSU in front and an RBI single by JUSTIN BATES gave Montclair a 3-1 advantage.

The Ospreys would tie the game in the sixth inning. Austin Gonella singled home the first run and Slinger's RBI double tied the contest at 3-3.

Stockton would escape a potential rally by MSU in the eighth. PETER COSENTINO opened the inning with a double and an intentional walk to Walker put runners on first and second with one out. Pitcher Tyler Apt would get out of it by striking out the next hitter and getting a fly out to end the inning.

After Montclair State failed to get the go-ahead run home from third in the top of the inning, Stockton would win it in the bottom half. John Perrino walked with one out and stole second on a strikeout. Slinger smacked a single into right field for the game-winner.

Apt (2-1) got the victory in relief logging the final four innings allowing two hits with two strikeouts and three walked. MIKE CANNAVO (1-1) suffered the loss for MSU after going 4 2/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with three strikeouts. Cosentino and Walker had two hits each for Montclair.

An error allowed the Red Hawks to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game however Stockton answered with three runs in its half for a 3-1 advantage. The Ospreys plated one more in the fourth for a three-run lead before Montclair cut that to a run in the seventh. Bates had a sacrifice fly and a JOE NORTON single made the score 4-3.

But again the Ospreys countered with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth for the final margin. O'Rourke (1-1) picked up the win striking out four and giving up eight hits and three runs (two earned). Freshman TYLER DIEFENBACH (2-3) was tagged with the loss.

Martinez was 3-for-4 with BRAD EDWARDS and DONALD GONNELLI each collecting two hits.

The Red Hawks will look to get back in the win column on Sunday, April 7 when it heads to Ewing, NJ to face The College of New Jersey at 1pm. The contest is a makeup of Friday's washout.
