SYDNEE SAPP and
CHELSEA ORBAN each scored three goals along with an assist as the Red Hawks jumped out to an eight-goal lead at halftime and cruised to a 17-8 victory over Kean University on Tuesday evening.
JESSICA ANDREULA tallied three times while
MEGAN MAHLSTADT collected a goal and three assists for MSU (7-6, 1-1 NJAC), which led 10-2 at the break. Taylor Nyberg had three goals for the Cougars (3-9, 0-2 NJAC).
Andreula gave Montclair a 1-0 lead 83 seconds into the game however Nyberg answered with 22:11 left tying the game at a goal apiece. Graver scored her first a little more than a minute later sparking a seven-goal run by the Red Hawks. Andreula and Orban scored less than a minute apart with Graver's second making the score 4-1 with 14:07 to play.
Sapp recorded her first goal two minutes later and scores from
BRITTANY COSTIGAN and Andreula 36 seconds apart finished the run as MSU led 8-1 with 10:06 remaining. Morgan Graham snapped the
spurt with six minute left however Mahlstadt and Graver each scored inside the final four minutes as MSU led 10-2 at halftime.
The Cougars would register four of the first five goals in the second half pulling within 11-5 on Nyberg's second with 20:09 left in the contest. Montclair answered with a five-goal run to widen its lead to double digits. Sapp got the first and Orban scored twice around an
AMBER GONZALEZ goal. Costigan netted the final goal giving MSU a 16-6 advantage with just under eight minutes to play.
Costigan added six draws and three ground balls to complete her evening. Sapp added two draws with Graver and Mahlstadt scooping up three ground balls apiece. Graver also forced three turnovers with Orban getting two.
AMANDA MAGUIRE stopped five shots.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 13 at home. The Red Hawks face Rutgers-Camden at Sprague Field with the NJAC contest beginning at 1:00 pm.
