Montclair, NJ – Senior KELLIE VIZZUSO scored twice and assisted on another goal as 13th-ranked Montclair State blanked MIT, 4-0 at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.
Junior forward ELIZABETH CIMILLUCA collected a goal and assist as the Red Hawks (2-0) completed their opening weekend with a second straight victory. LINSEY CHAMPA also scored for MSU with KELLY WATSON and MADDIE FREEMAN each recording an assist.
The Red Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Champa gave MSU a 1-0 lead just 45 seconds into the contest. Off a penalty corner, Watson fired a shot toward the cage that was knocked down. Champa got a stick on the loose ball flipping it inside the left post for the game's first goal.
Vizzuso extended the lead to 2-0 with 5:47 to go in the first period. Cimilluca sent a ball toward the middle that was picked up by Vizzuso who chipped the shot past Engineers goalkeeper Grace Moore for her first of the season.
Montclair keeper NICOLE ANDRIANI helped that two-goal lead hold up making a pair of consecutive saves during the second period. She denied Paige Forester on a close-range shot with just under five minutes left before halftime before stopping Amanda Garofalo on the follow up. Andriani would duplicate the feat two minutes later with back-to-back stops against Laura Chen and Devon Goetz.
Leading by two at the break, Vizzuso scored again with 4:59 to go in the third. Freeman slid a pass from inside five yards to Vizzuso for the goal making the score 3-0. Cimillucca accounted for the final goal in the fourth, a blast from the left wing off a penalty corner.
Andriani finished with five saves while Moore tallied nine. MSU outshot MIT 15-7 and took 13 of the 18 penalty corners in the contest.
Montclair State is back in action on Wednesday, September 4 with its first road contest of the season. MSU will be in New Paltz, NY to face New Paltz at 4:00 pm.
