Montclair, NJ – Sophomore
LEXINGTON WOLF and freshman
GABBY D'EMILIO each scored goals as Montclair State shut out Mount St. Mary, 2-0 in its home opener at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior goalkeeper
PHOEBE BLEDSOE stopped two shots and recorded her second shutout of the season as the Red Hawks evened their record at 2-2-1 on the season while upping it mark against the Knights (1-4) to 4-0.
The Red Hawks were awarded a corner kick in the 10
th minute after a
CALLIE BOHUS shot was knocked away by Mount St. Mary keeper Cyan Scott. Emily DeGetyer served a ball across to the far post where a charging Wolf was able to tap it in for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 MSU lead.
MSU made that lead stand as it allowed the Knights just one shot in the first half, an attempt by Alexa Franceschi that was blocked inside the box by a Red Hawk defender. Mount St. Mary would get chances in the second half with a pair of shots in the first 15 minutes. Both were scooped up by Bledsoe.
Meanwhile Scott kept the contest at a goal differential thanks in part to back-to-back saves against Samantha Senator and
MADDIE MUSICO at the 63:16 mark. She would later make three more denying D'Emilio all three times during a six-minute span.
But the fourth time proved to be the charm for D'Emilio, scored her first of the season. Freshman
PAIGE YOCUM gathered up a loose ball before sliding a pass to D'Emilio at the top the box. D'Emilio then ripped a shot inside the right post making the score 2-0 with 11:44 to play in the contest.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 14 with a road contest at Ursinus College. Kickoff in Collegeville, PA is set for Noon.
