TORI ROLLS had a goal and assist as Montclair State rallied from an early two-goal deficit for a 2-2 tie at local rival William Paterson on Wednesday evening.
GABBY D'EMILIO and
CAITLIN MEAD each collected a streak as the Red Hawks' five-game win streak became a six-game unbeaten streak. MSU is now 5-2-2 on the season, 1-0-1 in NJAC play while the Pioneers are 4-2-2 overall, 0-1-1 in conference play.
William Paterson snapped a scoreless tie in the 28
th minute as Marisa Adelman netted her eighth goal of the season. Lorraine Moffitt served a corner from the right side over to the far post where Adelman knocked in a lunging header for the first goal of the game.
Corrine Bowe widened the Pioneers lead to 2-0 just over seven minutes later using a slick move up the left flank and around a defender before launching a long shot inside the right post. Montclair would get a much-needed goal in the 37
th minute on Rolls' first career tally. Mead sent in a cross from the left side with Rolls chesting the ball into the back of the net while colliding with the WPU keeper.
The Red Hawks were down 2-1 heading into the second half when Rolls became a facilitator on the tying goal at the 47:01 mark. Rolls sent cross to the left side with D'Emilio heading in the service for her second of the year.
Montclair turned up the pressure after that with three shots on goal however Erica Hickey stopped each one. Hickey would make one more at the 78:28 mark with WPU coming inches away from taking the lead on the other end moments later. Adelman headed a ball off a corner kick that was cleared away by an MSU defender.
MSU got the final shot in regulation off the foot of
CATHERINE CARNEVALE but Hickey was able to snare it as the game went into overtime. The Pioneers would get the lone chance in the first extra period. Bowe sent a shot n frame in the 95
th minute however
PHOEBE BLEDSOE was there to make the save sending the contest into another OT.
Montclair's
KAITLYN SCRIVANICH knocked a ball wide left to open the second overtime with a shot that went wide with WPU's Kristen Bowe going high on her attempt less than minute later. Adelman added another for the Pioneers but that too was wide.
Hickey finished with 10 saves for the Pioneers while Bledsoe totaled five. Montclair outshot WPU 18-13 in the contest.
The Red Hawks got two chances in the final five minutes. Chisom Onyewyenyi was denied by Hickey with 3:14 remaining. Hickey then made a save against
SAMANTHA SENATORE with 93 seconds to go.
Montclair State returns to MSU Soccer Park for its next contest on Saturday, September 28 as the Red Hawks host Rowan University at 1:00 pm.
