Montclair, NJ – Freshman
SAMANTHA SENATORE scored with 2:53 remaining in the first overtime lifting Montclair State to a 1-0 victory over Rowan at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday.
Senatore's golden goal helped the Red Hawks stretch their unbeaten streak to seven matches as they improved to 6-2-2, 2-0-1 in NJAC play. Bristol Pizzuto and Amanda Leber combined for three saves for Rowan (4-4, 1-1 NJAC).
The victory was MSU's first against the Profs since 2014, a 1-0 victory in the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament. In fact, the last nine meetings between the two have produced five ties, including four scoreless ones with the other four all decided by a goal.
It appeared as it another contest would be headed toward a 0-0 tie until Senatore came up with her second goal of the season. Sophomore
EMILY DEGEYTER collected a clear just on the defensive side of mid field and flipped a pass that got through three defenders.
Running with the play, Senatore picked up the ball and raced in against Leber, who came out to challenge above the 18. Senatore made a quick move to her left avoiding the sliding keeper and raced to within six yards before tapping the ball into the open net for the game winner.
Rowan out shot MSU 12-11 with each team getting solid chances several of which came in the second half and the first extra period. The Profs came so close to scoring in the opening moments of the second as an MSU clearing pass inside 10 yards ricocheted off Domonique Morrone back toward the goal. However, Linsday Freewalt was able to tap away the carom with a right hand save just before the goal line.
Pizzuto had one stop and Rowan got a fortunate break with 18 seconds remaining in regulation as DeGetyer's shot from top right side of the box clanged off the post-crossbar connection in the upper right corner.
In the overtime, Caitlyn Cordell ripped a shot two minute in that Freewalt snared with a diving stop to her left. Moments later it was MSU's turn as
TORI ROLLS put forth an attempt that was covered up by Leber. Freewalt made another versus Daria Jones 56 seconds before the winning tally.
Montclair State is back in action on Tuesday, October 1 with a non-conference contest. The Red Hawks host DeSales University at MSU Soccer Park with kickoff set for 7pm.
