CARLY WATERMAN registered 22 kills and 13 digs as Montclair State outlasted Rutgers-Camden in four sets at the Panzer Athletic Center on Thursday evening.
LEAH HIGGINS added 10 kills as the Red Hawks (10-3, 2-1 NJAC) knocked off the Scarlet Raptors (7-7, 0-3 NJAC) 25-22, 24-26, 25-12 and 25-22 for its fifth consecutive victory. Morgan Mulligan had 11 kills and 13 digs for Rutgers-Camden.
Montclair jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set thanks to a pair of kills by
JILLIAN WILSON. The Red Hawks built a 9-3 cushion before Rutgers-Camden went on a 10-1 run to take a 13-10 advantage over MSU.
MSU answered with a quick 4-0 run, giving the Red Hawks a 14-13 lead on its way to a 25-22 opening set win.
Rutgers-Camden would even the match with a 26-24 win in the second game. The Scarlet Raptors registered 15 kills in the set and held the Red Hawks to a .054 hitting percentage in the set.
With the match even at one, Montclair put together it's strongest set with a 25-12 win in the third frame. MSU outhit the Scarlet Raptors .310 to -.100 in the period. Waterman had six of her team high 22 kills to put the Red Hawks in the lead.
After a back-and-fourth final set, Montclair went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. Rutgers Camden would cut into the lead and make it 15-13 before
LEAH HIGGINS ended the rally with a kill.
Montclair would use a kill by Waterman and a miscue by the Scarlet Raptors to seal the match with a 25-22 win.
MEGAN O'ROURKE added a double-double in the win with 36 assists and 11 digs.
MADDIE VALKO chipped in with 25 digs for the Red Hawks as Jamie Mulligan picked up a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs in a losing effort.
Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, September 28 with a pair of matches in Patchogue, New York. MSU takes on Baruch College at 11:30 am followed by a 1:30 pm contest with host St. Joseph's College.
