Men's Soccer Loses OT Heartbreaker at Rowan, 3-2

Freshman Sanchez Posts Multi-Goal Game

Glassboro, NJ – Matt Hendrickson scored off a header 4:58 into the second overtime as Rowan University edged Montclair State 3-2 on Saturday evening.

Modou Sowe had goal for the Profs (5-1-3, 1-0-1) who snapped a two-match losing streak against MSU beating the Red Hawks for the first time since October 2017 by the identical 3-2 margin.
Freshman OSCAR SANCHEZ netted both goals for Montclair (7-4), which fell to 0-2 in conference play.

Sanchez gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute with the first of his two tallies. The first-year player dribbled around multiple defenders before unleashing a shot inside the box that tucked into the bottom right of the goal.  Montclair was able to hold on to that 1-0 lead until 9:08 to play in the first half when Sowe knotted the contest on a diving header into the lower right corner.

Rowan quickly grabbed the lead 91 seconds into the second half on a Jay Vandermark goal. Wilby Alfred sent a short pass to Vandermark just outside the box with the latter blasting a shot into the top center of the goal for the Profs' 2-1 advantage.

Montclair would get a couple of shots on goal that were turned away by James Weinberg but Sanchez was able to get one through with 11:27 left banging in a low cross from STEFAN KOROMAN that tucked into the lower right corner.

Each team would get chances late. Weinberg stopped DIMITRI MATARAS and NIXON SOGLO on shots a minute apart inside the final four of the half. Red Hawks keeper MICHAEL MEJIA came up with one against Ryan Logar with 1:27 left and then denied Matt Fahey in the last second as the game headed to overtime.

Neither team put a shot on frame in the first OT and Mejia made one early in the second extra period. The Profs would get a corner kick two minutes later and took full advantage. Alex Ferrara served the ball from the left side where Hendrickson was able to get a head on it. The ball deflected off the Mejia and into the net for the game-winner.

Weinberg and Mejia each finished with five saves with Rowan out-shooting the Red Hawks 19-14.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, October 2 hosting local rival William Paterson at MSU Soccer Park. Kickoff of the NJAC contest is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
