Glenside, PA – Sophomore Emily DeGetyer converted a penalty kick with 31 seconds remaining in regulation as Montclair State picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory against Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon.
Goalkeeper
LINDSAY FREEWALT stopped five shots for her first shutout as the Red Hawks improved to 1-2-1 on the season and earned a split of their contests at Arcadia University over the weekend.
Montclair appeared headed to its second straight overtime contest and third of the year when the Sea Gulls (2-1) were whistled for a foul inside the box. DeGeyter stepped up and buried the opportunity giving Montclair State the only goal it would need.
DeGeyter's goal came after a furious final seven minutes of regulation in which both teams had chances to put a score on the board. Freewalt denied a header by Julianna Boller with seven minutes to go with Salisbury's Emma Hill doing the same against
EMILY BEENDERS a minute later. Freewalt again came up big with 5:02 left stopping Dana Gordon and recorded her last save with 64 seconds left, a smother of a shot by Boller.
Freewalt posted two saves early in the second half to keep the game scoreless and Montclair came within inches of taking the lead but a shot by Chisom Onyewyenyi clanged off the crossbar. The same unfortunate bounce would come the Sea Gulls' way in the 79
th minute as Kasey Lamb hit a shot that also banged off the crossbar.
Salisbury outshot MSU 11-10 with the Red Hawks taking six of the nine corner kicks in the game.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 11 when its makes its home debut at MSU Soccer Park. The Red Hawks host Mount St. Mary at 4:00 pm.
