Men's Lacrosse Pulls Away from DeSales in Season Opener, 11-3

Dancsecs Five Goals, Francisco Four Assists

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore midfielder MATT DANCSECS scored five goals as Montclair State tallied the final nine in an 11-3 victory over DeSales in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

Senior SKYLER FRANCISCO added a goal and four assists as the Red Hawks (1-0) shut down the Bulldogs (0-1) for the final 41:39 of the contest. The victory also helped MSU avenge a 14-13 double-overtime loss to DeSales in Center Valley last season.

Junior ROBERT BRENNAN gave Montclair a 1-0 lead 18 seconds into the contest, however back-to-back goals by Matt Motto and Tom Connors 1:23 apart put the Bulldogs in front 2-1 at the end of one quarter. Dancsecs and Zach Bowen traded goals to open up the second, leaving MSU on the short side of a 3-2 score before the Red Hawks began their game-ending run.

Francisco fed Dansecs with 9:36 to play forging a 3-3 tie, and Montclair moved in front with 73 seconds remaining before halftime on Dancsecs' third of the game, sending the Red Hawks into the locker room with a one-goal advantage.

Dancsecs collected his fourth 40 seconds into the third on a man-up tally with Francisco scoring two minutes later, making the score 6-3. JESSE JAMES WEST and CHRISTIAN BOYLE combined on a man-up tally inside two minutes and an unassisted goal by JON LANZALOTTO with 10 seconds left gave MSU an 8-3 heading into the fourth.

Francisco and Dancsecs teamed up for the first goal of the fourth 3:16 into the period with TYLER MCCREERY scoring his first of the season less than a minute later. Brennan capped the scoring with Montclair State's third man-up goal of the contest with 4:55 remaining.

Junior goalkeeper MATTHEW MCLAREN stopped eight shots for the Red Hawks, who outshot the Bulldogs 38-22. WILSON SMITH led MSU with seven ground balls while JACK GRECO and TREVOR HERBST (6 faceoff wins) had five apiece. Smith, Greco, and Kirn each forced a pair of turnovers.

The Red Hawks are next in action on Wednesday, February 19, when it meets in-state rival FDU-Florham in Madison at 5:00 pm. It will be the first meeting between the schools since March 26, 2008, a 12-11 MSU road victory.
